Hi I’m Helen.
Complex repeating patterns are my forte! That’s why I love to design wallpaper! My work is very illustrative and draws from many inspirations, such as fairy tales, classic children’s books such as Alice in Wonderland and tv shows like the 1960’s version of the Addams family, I adored that show growing up. I have always been obsessed with fashion photography and film too which both provide huge sources of inspiration for me (even if it’s not obvious).
I grew up in Scotland, but moved to London the minute I left school when I was 17 to study Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, specialising in painting. Although born in the countryside, I’m a true city girl so I could not get there fast enough.
After I graduated, I worked as a graphic designer then a full-time artist. I had a studio in Hackney Wick in East London and set about painting portraits of birds and gothic looking children. However, I loved painting but I hate and still do, talking about the meaning of my work. So I started designing wallpaper. In 2014 I started a company called Witch and Watchman and created very maximalist hand painted wallpapers (and also fabric) using oil on canvas, finally I felt I could paint what I wanted without having to explain it.
In 2017 I moved to Los Angeles where I currently live with my husband and daughter Wednesday.
